"Final Hour" is the sixth and final episode of Season 4, the 42nd episode overall, and the series finale of Continuum.
Synopsis
Kiera and Alec risk everything to stop the future soldiers and their devastating plan. Kellog, despite a loose alliance with Kiera, has plans of his own. All factions clash violently in order to determine which path the future will take.
Plot Overview
Carlos is talking with Bishop, but leaves and approaches Kiera. She asks him to give her time before he raids the warehouse with the machine and soldiers.
Keira tells Alec that it's time to go and he comments that has many meanings. However, Kiera get him to leave with her, despite the fact that he's not sure what future he'll send her back to.
At the warehouse, they start the machine only for two soldiers to make it through before it crashes. They explain that there's not much time for the portal to be locked on the correct tether. Jason stops at Alec's to take the original time travel orb, and stops to write a note. Chen arrives at Piron and opens the safe to find the other time travel orb.
Kellog monologues with Vazquez wanting more information but she just watches him. A soldier arrives and asks if it was possible that Kiera and Alec messed with the key and Kellog says it's highly likely. After the soldier leaves, Vazquez says they were given specific instructions on how to handle young Kellog.
Carlos tells Kiera that even though she's messed up his life, he wouldn't change it. They say goodbye and hug one another. Kiera and Alec get in the car and Dillon comes over and wants to know why they're covering for Travis. Kiera says she's wanted to tell him for a longtime. She pulls out her weapon and shows it to him, then explains the fact that they were all from the future. Dillon realizes she's not joking and Alec nods. She tells Dillon they need good men like him to keep the future safe.
Kellog kills Vazquez, frustrated with her for turning down his offer to rule the future with him. In her last dying breath, however, she reveals that he is her father. Kellog then displays some conflicting behavior for a moment, but soon reverts back to his old self. Keira, Alec, and Jason meet up. Kiera says Jason could come back, but he says he still has stuff to do. He hands her the note he wrote earlier and asks her to give it to his father. It's stuff he never got to say.
Kiera walks towards the building after Kellog calls to say he's ready. Alec runs up and thanks her for changing his life. She explains it was all him because he wanted to change.
As soon as they get inside, Brad stops them. He explains that Marcellus lied to him and that they aren't saving people from his time, but bringing the war back in time to win it first. Much the same way Liber8 tried and failed. Carlos arrives outside the building and Dillon approaches and asks to help. He hands Dillon a gun and they go in. Dillon asks how long Carlos has known about Kiera and he says he should have told him sooner. However, Dillon says he wouldn't have listened.
Carlos and Dillon go in the warehouse but they are attacked by one of the soldiers wearing a weapons suit. Garza comes in and meets Chen. He explains that Kiera has done more to change the future then anyone else.
The soldiers find out that Kellog sabotaged the machine so he could use it when he wants to. Kiera knew that Kellog was going to go back in time and kill everyone when she and Liber8 arrived in the past so he could be in charge sooner and have a major influence on Alec.
When the portal is activated and tethered to his dark future, Kellog steps through with the refurbished Quantum Device, after having reprogrammed it for what he thinks is the moment everyone arrived in the past. The moment he steps through the portal, his other future is destroyed, which then leaves the portal tethered to a future no one is sure of. Dillon gets shot by the future soldier. Kiera rushes to him but both Carlos and Alec tell her she needs to leave. Despite the unsurity of where it leads, Alec hands her the orb and Kiera uses this last opportunity to travel through it with the other Quantum Device. The Traveller shows up and is in the portal too, smiling.
When the Traveler raises his arm and it starts glowing, everyone scrambles out of the place. Garza, Brad, Chen, Jason, Alec, and Carlos all discuss if Kiera is still alive and he admits he doesn't know and they won't for another 60 years. Garza says it doesn't matter because Kellog has gone back in time to kill them when they all arrived, and Alec explains how they tricked Kellog when they used Piron's computers to reprogram Kiera orb.
After Alec reveals this, Kellog is shown surrounded by trees. He is shocked to realize that he has traveled really far into the past, surrounded by Native Americans in a forest. Knowing that he no longer has access to advanced technology to use the device again, Kellog is now unable to travel in time and, presumably, dies in the past.
Kiera reappears inside a building, and notices that Kagame sits before her. She initially assumes that Liber8 has dominated this timeline, as Kagame would otherwise be incarcerated. To her surprise, Kagame does not even know what Liber8 is, but then recalls stories that Uncle Julian used to tell him as a child. Stories about an uncivilized past and a movement known as "Liber8", and then about the time traveling woman known as Kiera Cameron. Suddenly, older Alec rushes over to join this awkward conversation, slightly dismayed that he missed Keira's return. As soon as she realizes it's actually Alec, she gives him a hug. He explains to Keira that her efforts have been a success and this timeline has ultimately turned out for the better. Kiera asks if her son is here, and Alec takes her outside to see him.
As they walk through a park (which has been named in Carlos Fonnegra and the VPDs honor because Emily lobbied for it until it was done). Keira asks and Alec states he and Emily were together up to the day she died. Alec explains they all thought she died that day so they made a better future for her. They reach a fountain and observe Sam playing on the other side. Overjoyed, Kiera attempts to go over to him, but Alec stops her. She is confused at first, but then realizes the harsh reality. Another Kiera, the one who was born in this timeline, goes over to join Sam. Kiera may have finally returned to 2077, but it is no longer her 2077, and therefore not her Sam Cameron. Alec tells her that despite this, Kiera has created a vastly better future for him to grow up in, free from the oppression of the Corporate Congress. She cannot be with him, but that is the "price of love" that she must pay. Kiera tears up at this realization, but ultimately nods in understanding.
The two of them watch the loving family from across the fountain, among the vast futuristic city of the new and better future.
